Monitoring the Media
The Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County monitors the local print and broadcast media to ensure that they report accurately and fairly about issues concerning the South County Jewish community, Israel, and the Middle East.
It's a big job, and we need your help. Keep your eyes on headlines, stories, and photos about Jewish interests. If you see, hear, or read something you think is inaccurate, imbalanced, or unfair, contact the JCRC immediately.
While we investigate, don't sit and stew. You can write a letter to the editor of the offending publication or broadcast.
Here are some hints to help you get your letter published:
- Use the latest technology: Send your letter via e-mail or fax, rather than regular mail. If you absolutely must use regular mail, type your letter, never hand write.
- Be concise: The shorter the letter, the better chance it has of getting published. Try to stay at 250 words or less.
- Be specific: Say exactly what was right or wrong about the coverage, why it was right or wrong and how it can be corrected.
- Don't get personal: Stay focused on the coverage and the error. Don't call the media outlet, the reporter or the media organization names.
- Timing is everything: Send your letter mid-week, when editors have time to read it.
- Pick your battles: Don't try comment on every detail you think is wrong. Stick to the most important issues.
- Be nice: If you criticize when you see something you don't like, compliment when you see something you do.
