TAKE ACTION! Tell FL House Reps: DIVEST FROM IRAN & SUDAN
Support House Bill 441 on "Scrutinized Companies"
Iran,
whose leader has stated time and time again that he wants “to wipe
Israel off the map” is openly pursuing nuclear power. Leaders in Sudan
continue to terrorize their population, killing and displacing hundreds
of thousands.
RIGHT NOW,
a Bill that would strengthen sanctions on Iran and Sudan by divesting
from companies with an investment of $1 million or more has only one
more hurdle to pass in the Florida legislature. HB 441 on “Scrutinized
Companies” would ensure that state and local contracts are in
compliance. And this bill needs only one final House Floor Vote in order
to be sent to Governor Rick Scott. We ask you to reach out to any
House member, including those outside your district.

BACKGROUND:
Iran,
whose leader has stated time and time again that he wants “to wipe
Israel off the map” is openly pursuing nuclear power. While the leaders
of Sudan terrorized their population of more than 250,000, killing and
displacing hundreds of thousands from their homes, together we stood up.
In
2007, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County took a stand,
working with our state elected officials, CRCS, churches, synagogues,
public schools, “United Against a Nuclear Iran,” and The Save Darfur
Coalition of Palm Beach County. State Senator Ted Deutch spearheaded
the groundbreaking legislation, “Protecting Florida's Investment Act,”
which proved that by working together, anything is possible.
House
and the Senate, with assistance from Representative Porth, Hasner and
Schwartz the legislation that would prohibit companies from doing
business with the government of Iran and Sudan without affecting current
investments of U.S. Companies passed. Since this time, over 15 states
and more than a dozen cities have followed that lead.
This
year, on a state level, the new legislation would strengthen sanctions
on Iran and Sudan by divesting from companies who have an investment of
$1 million or more. The bill would ensure that state and local
contracts are in compliance. This legislation would be similar to
California's bill that was signed by Governor Schwarzenegger in
September.
The
new bill has passed the Senate and was passed in the House. The bill
will need a full final House Floor Vote in order to be sent to Governor
Rick Scott. We ask you to reach out to any House member, especially
