Honoring Our Community Heroes in Jewish Education at JEC Bar Mitzvah Year Gala (March 2, 2010)
To celebrate the Jewish Education Commission's 13 years as the central address for local Jewish education, more than 300 people gathered to honor 25 local Jewish Education Heroes. From throughout the diverse South Palm Beach Jewish community, they united to rejoice and learn at the JEC Bar Mitzvah Year Gala on March 2 at B'nai Torah Congregation. The honorees serve in Jewish preschools, day schools and congregational schools, Holocaust and adult education programs, and as teen leaders of Jewish Forums at local high schools.

College-Bound Learn to Defend Israel at 10th Annual Campus Advocacy Forum (March 8, 2010)
More than 60 college-bound students from throughout area high schools spent an evening in Zinman Hall learning to define and defend against anti-Semitism, anti-Zionism and anti-Israel sentiment at the 10th Annual Campus Advocacy Forum. Sponsored by the Federation's Jewish Community Relations Council and Jewish Education Commission, and the Anti-Defamation League, the interactive program led the teens through real-life campus scenarios, and guided them to explore effective responses.
P2K Women to Women Exchange (February-March 2010)
The bonds of sisterhood with Federation’s Israeli Sister City, Kiryat Bialik, just got even stronger as five local women and six Israelis came together in Boca Raton for the first leg of this year’s Women to Women Exchange. They enjoyed meals and museums, Purim, Shabbat and shopping together, and planned a service project. After continuing to “meet” online, in October the Florida contingent of Rebecca Appelbaum, Rabbi Jessica Spitalnic Brockman, Monica Goldstein, Melissa Romero and Dina Schwartz, will head to Israel for the second Exchange visit.
St. Andrews/Metro Sports Night Hits a Home Run (February 22, 2010)
When 200 men of all ages tailgated at St. Andrews Country Club on February 22, they heard from sports broadcaster Roy Firestone and Nets team owner Lewis Katz, and mingled with Josh Miller and other stars and franchise owners. Chaired by Herb Kane, Glenn Schwartzman and Craig Zeuner, Federation’s groundbreaking Men’s Sports Night Out also featured a live auction with Jay Feely, a sports memorabilia display and “game day” food and drinks, as it raised needed funds to support the annual campaign.
Attorney Gloria Allred Roars at Lion of Judah Luncheon (February 11, 2010)
The most awaited annual event in local Jewish women's philanthropy was another roaring success, as 400 of the Federation's most generous women gathered at the Polo Club in Boca Raton on February 11 for the Lion of Judah Luncheon. They cheered as they heard from Gloria Allred, whose legal work for three decades has played an integral role in combating injustices and winning new rights for women and minorities. They also took to heart an update on the increased needs for services among vulnerable Jewish people who depend on our Federation.
Momentum Continues with 4th and 5th Metro Business Schmooze-Day (January 12 & February 9, 2010)
The evening chill was no match for the warmth of Jewish professionals gathered again on January 12 and February 9 for the finest in networking and Asian tidbits. The 4th and 5th Tuesday Schmooze-Day confirmed that this Metro Business “Happy Hour” series at Asia :: Sushi Wok & Grill in Boca Raton is the place to be seen and get known. Guests enjoyed the company and the ambiance, and heard from Bryan Drowos about how they can help their businesses as they help the community. Only two more opportunities to get in on this season’s Tuesday Schmooze-Days: April 13 and May 11.
Ellen Sarnoff Honored at Boca Grove Pacesetter Evening (Sunday, January 31, 2010)
On January 31, 120 Boca Grove Pacesetters gathered for an elegant evening of cocktails, conversation and dinner, to celebrate their community's generosity on behalf of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. They also united in honoring Ellen R. Sarnoff, 2007-10 Federation Campaign Chair, for her outstanding dedication and leadership. Chaired by Judith Beiner and Esther Summer, the event also featured guest speaker Dr. Robert Watson, Director of the American Studies Program at Lynn University.
Federation Men's Golf Classic at Boca Rio: Great Golf for a Great Cause (Monday, January 25, 2010)
On January 25th, Federation men again enjoyed the most exclusive local golf experience while helping meet vital community needs, at the 2nd Invitational Men’s Golf Classic at Boca Rio Golf Club. The extraordinary day, featuring golf, cocktails and dinner, was again chaired by Alan Cornell, Michael Lipton and Joe Mishkin. Ron and Evie Krancer were again the Presenting Sponsor. The names of 2010 Low Net winners: Jay Felner, Steve Landsman and Daniel Weiss; and 2010 Low Gross winners: Mort Handel, Joe Mishkin, Sam Sidewater and Barry Sylvetsky will be engraved on the Bedowitz Cup.
Crown of Judah Luncheon: Dershowitz Keynotes as Clarice Pressner is Honored (Thursday, January 28, 2010)
The Federation’s most philanthropic women were thanked on January 28th at the first Crown of Judah Luncheon just for women. Lisa Mintz chaired and hosted the most elegant event at her beautiful home. The 110 women present honored Clarice Pressner, who founded the Crown of Judah Division 20 years ago. They also heard from keynote speaker Alan Dershowitz, a most distinguished Harvard law professor, defender of individual liberties and Jewish causes, author and media personality. JCRC Hosts Government Officials at "Shrinking Resources, Escalating Needs" (Friday, January 29, 2010)
Amid continued economic challenges, the JCRC brought elected officials together with Federation and agency executives and lay leaders on January 29, for the annual state legislative send-off. Moderated by JCRC Chair Rabbi David Steinhardt, Congressman Ron Klein; State Senator Ted Deutch; State Reps Ellyn Bogdanoff, Maria Sachs & Kevin Rader; and County Commissioners Burt Aaronson and Steve Abrams shared their insights about the coming year after learning about Federation and agency priorities. They heard presentations about critical gaps in safety net services for seniors and people with disabilities, including a synopsis of the Federation's Senior Services Study. State Rep. Mack Bernard also reported on his visit to relief efforts in Haiti.
Celebration, MLK Observance Kicks Off United We Serve South Palm Beach County (Sunday, January 17, 2010)
The Federation’s groundbreaking United We Serve project kicked off with a celebration on January 17, a day before nearly 700 volunteers headed to volunteer at 30 local nonprofits on MLK Day. The kick-off featured Congressman Ron Klein, Palm Beach County Commissioner Steve Abrams, Federation President & CEO William S. Bernstein, Rabbi Amy Rader and a video message from Governor Charlie Crist. Rabbi Marc Schneier, President of The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, spoke about Shared Dreams: Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Jewish Community. Denise and Jordan Zimmerman were United We Serve Honorary Co-chairs.
Sharansky, Scarborough, Ketubah Society Headline Evening of Valor
An exceptional night was in store for the Federation’s top donors on January 10 at the 2010 Evening of Valor. Federation Honors SS St. Louis Voyage Surviving Passengers with 70th Anniversary Commemoration
Seventy years ago the steamship St. Louis arrived at the port of Miami with more than 900 Jewish refugees seeking a safe haven from the growing persecution in Europe. The St. Louis became a “ship of destiny,” carrying the fate of millions of others with a clear message to Adolf Hitler: Jewish people were expendable. On December 14, joined by 34 surviving SS St. Louis passengers and local neighbors who bear personal witness to the Holocaust, 400 Federation guests commemorated this watershed historical moment. Contributions from Rani H. Garfinkle, in loving memory of her beloved husband Sandor Garfinkle; and by and Pamela & Howard Kaye and The National Foundation for Jewish Continuity, Inc. made the moving event possible.
Addison Reserve Volunteers Go Hands-On for Chanukah to Stop Local Hunger
On December 4, a special group of Addison Reserve volunteers packed Chanukah food bags for the rising numbers of South Palm Beach neighbors in need. They purchased the food after raising $15,000 above residents’ annual campaign gifts within their gated community. The packages also included two $25 gift cards to use at Publix and CVS. Addison volunteers also raise money for Passover food packages. Publix provided “green” bags, and Addison Reserve general manager Michael McCarthy was again instrumental. Boca Pointe Opening Event with Andy Roddick and Justin Gimelstob
A sold out crowd of 300 heard from Andy Roddick and Justin Gimelstob at The Club at Boca Pointe's Opening Federation Event on December 13. Roddick also received a Federation Humanitarian Award in a Center Court ceremony. He was honored for courageously and selflessly refusing to defend his title at the Dubai Tennis Championships when Israeli star Shahar Peer was unable to play after being denied a visa. Boca Pointe Chairs Jane Fishkoff and Craig Zeuner presented the award with local Holocaust survivors. Roddick appeared courtesy of the Andy Roddick Foundation, during its 9th Annual Charity Weekend in Boca Raton.
Lion of Judah Outreach a Roaring Success
The cause, the program, the ambiance and the sisterhood came together on December 9 to make the Lion of Judah Outreach a roaring success. Featured speaker Sadia Shepard’s search that led from her Protestant and Muslim parents to finding and documenting her Jewish maternal grandmother's Bene Israel roots in Bombay, India enthralled 250 women in morning and afternoon sessions at the new Wyndham Hotel in Boca Raton. Meryl Gallatin, Women’s Vice Chair of Campaign, delivered a powerful Federation message, and to date ten new women have become Lions. Kudos go to event Co-chairs Dale Pratt and Judi Schuman; to Emily Grabelsky and Barbara Werner, Lion Vice Chairs, who spearheaded the recruitment, and to all the Community Lion Chairs for their efforts.
JWF Kickoff: “If You Want To Get It Done Ask a Jewish Woman”
Women who care about improving the opportunities, choices and status of Jewish women and girls gathered at the Gallery Center in Boca Raton on December 2 for Voices of Women Fall Kickoff of the Jewish Women’s Foundation (JWF). They enjoyed an hors d’oeuvres reception and had a special D’var Torah by Rabbi Marci Bloch before hearing from noted Judaic lecturer, educator and author Arna Poupko Fisher. Andrea Dubroff and Barbara Finkelstein co-chaired the evening, which was moderated by Mara Reuben. JWF offers a unique opportunity to be a hands-on philanthropist. 350 Women Hear Remarkable Quest for Jewish Identity at 5th Annual Education Day
The room was full and the spirit was strong as 350 women learned and shared at the 5th Annual Dottie Lipson Educational Journey on November 19 at Boca West Country Club. Of all ages and from all streams of Judaism, they were equally affected by the d'var torah from Rebbitzin Ahuvah New, Co-Director Chabad of East Boca, and by keynote speaker Tova Mordechai’s story of how her “unexplained deep pain” led her from an acclaimed international Christian ministry to an observant life in Safed, married to a rabbi, raising five children, teaching in seminaries and lecturing worldwide. Jill Rose and Dawn Pollay chaired the morning program and luncheon, which was presented by the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s Dorothy Seaman Department of Women’s Philanthropy.
