Our Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council once again joined with the JCRC of Palm Beach County in hosting the annual Legislative Send-off, on December 15, 2011. The Weisman Delray Community Center was the site for a candid, creative, productive dialogue with State Senators & Representatives, Federation leadership and leaders of agencies which provide services to residents in our community. Together, they explored our area’s needs and concerns in preparation for 2012 Florida legislative session’s early start on January 10. JCRC Chair Rabbi David Steinhardt and Federation Executive VP Marla Weiss Egers thanked legislators for their ongoing commitment to the vulnerable in our community, especially in these times of diminished funding and rising needs. Jewish Association for Residential Care Executive Director Dr. Debra Hallow and Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service President & CEO Danielle Hartman described effects of current and impending shortfalls, and opportunities for the legislature to restore, maintain and increase funding for vital human services. Stuart Silver, V.P. of Community Planning, reminded our elected officials of the continued need to help fund Federation Transportation Service, which provides door-to-door service for persons with physical limitations to their physician and other medical care providers.
State Representatives Joseph Abruzzo, Lori Berman, Mack Bernard, Jeff Clemens, and Mark Pafford acknowledged the needs in our community and vowed to support efforts to maintain state funding for social services. Revital Malca, Deputy Consul General of Israel to Florida and Puerto Rico; and staff from the offices of Congressman Alcee Hastings, State Senators Ellyn Bogdanoff and Maria Sachs, and State Representative Bill Hager were also on hand to express their support of our collective efforts.

| Federation leaders and JCRC Executive Committee members joined with other Jewish community leaders on September 15, 2011 to welcome Chaim Shacham, the new Consul General of the State of Israel to Florida and Puerto Rico. The reception was hosted by the JCRC in the Federation’s Levine Board Room. Afterward, the Consul General addressed the JCRC meeting on critical issues, including the “Arab Spring” and the need to build a positive brand for Israel and counter the preponderance of negative media coverage – a position which has been strongly advocated by the JCRC’s Israel Work Group. With regard to the unilateral move for Palestinian statehood, Shacham stated, "t’s not about a Palestinian state. It’s about one side aiming to win and the other wanting to build peace."

| Federation Honors SS St. Louis Voyage Surviving Passengers with 70th Anniversary Commemoration |
| Seventy years ago the steamship St. Louis arrived at the port of Miami with more than 900 Jewish refugees seeking a safe haven from the growing persecution in Europe. The St. Louis became a “ship of destiny,” carrying the fate of millions of others with a clear message to Adolf Hitler: Jewish people were expendable. On December 14, joined by 34 surviving SS St. Louis passengers and local neighbors who bear personal witness to the Holocaust, 400 Federation guests commemorated this watershed historical moment. Contributions from Rani H. Garfinkle, in loving memory of her beloved husband Sandor Garfinkle; and by and Pamela & Howard Kaye and The National Foundation for Jewish Continuity, Inc. made the moving event possible.
