Programming Highlights
In addition to our annual events,
the Jewish Community Relations Council is responsible for myriad
programs that occur throughout the year, as needed. Here is a
selection of our proudest moments of recent years and also some
projects on which we continue to work:
- The JCRC hosted a series of non-partisan, interfaith events
aimed at helping local voters understand issues in the 2004 elections.
- The
JCRC assembled leaders of 18 Jewish organizations in a show of
solidarity for Israel's leadership in the debate over the Gaza
withdrawal plan. The event was covered by all major print and
electronic media, including national coverage from the Associated Press.
- The
JCRC sponsored a community-wide program featuring US Congressman Robert
Wexler (D-FL 19th) and staff of AIPAC to discuss the role of the United
States in support of Israel and the next steps and challenges facing
the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli Government.
- The
JCRC organized and coordinated the local Jewish community's response to
the destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrina. The JCRC raised
emergency funds and provided relief assistance to those affected in the
Gulf Coast region.
- The JCRC participated in the interfaith
"Evening of Ethiopian Jewish Culture," at which an ensemble of Jewish
Ethiopian dancers performed in a local Episcopal Church.
- The
JCRC continues to work closely with the "Save Darfur Coalition of South
Palm Beach," an interfaith coalition of more than 31 community
organizations, churches, and synagogues. In January 2006, the JCRC
cosponored a community-wide rally to raise awareness about the
preventable human crisis in the Darfur region of western Sudan. More
than 300 people attended the rally, including a number of dignitaries.
Additionally, the JCRC urges participation in the "Million Voices for Darfur" postcard campaign.
- The JCRC
brought the Israeli elections of March 2006 home to Palm Beach County
through its sponsorship of a discussion with the Israeli Consul
General, Dr. Yitschak Ben Gad, and politial analyst Micah D. Halpern.
- The
JCRC joined 16 South Florida Jewish organizations at the State House of
Representatives for the second annual Tallahassee Jewish Advoacacy Day
in late March, 2006. More than 80 citizen-advocates mobilized to make
our voices heard and work together on social justice issues, including
securing a record $593,288 in funding for Federation services for
seniors, Holocaust survivors, and individuals with mental illness or
developmental disabilities.
- The JCRC hosted our state
representatives and state senators as they addressed the JCRC,
community leaders, agency directors, and members of Jewish agency
boards for a "Legislative Wrap Up" to recap the 2006 Legislative
Session in Tallahassee.
