Imagine a day when hundreds of individuals and families from our community gather together to improve countless lives for their neighbors, in Israel and around the world. On March 14, hundreds of volunteers of all ages will do just that at the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s 2010 Super Sunday phone-a-thon – and you’re welcome to share this extraordinary experience.
Volunteers will participate in shifts from 9:00 to 11:30 am, 11:00 am to 1:30 pm, and a family shift from 3:00 to 5:30 pm. All shifts include meals, snacks and many chances to win prizes donated by local businesses.
“This year poses an unusual challenge - and all of us are needed,” said Hava Leipzig Holzhauer. “Each month, more individuals and families come to the Federation for help, while at the same time many in our community cannot contribute as they have in the past. This Catch 22 has moved more community members to get involved and help in whichever ways they can, including more hands-on volunteering. Super Sunday allows them to give both financially and of their time.”
“And this year there are even more ways to help on Super Sunday,” added Debra Halperin. "Volunteers will not only help raise urgently needed funds; they will also be able to contribute through hands-on projects. We’re keeping up the momentum of the Federation’s United We Serve Project that engaged 670 volunteers at 35 nonprofit agencies throughout the community on Martin Luther King Day.”
Super Sunday volunteers and others are asked to bring items from art supplies to non-perishable food to cell phones, to be given to Federation beneficiary agencies and to Israeli and U.S. soldiers. Students will be writing letters to the soldiers, and assembling packages of food and toiletries for them as well as for clients of the Forster Family Kosher Food Pantry.
“For parents in my generation who are working while raising children, combining volunteering and philanthropy with family time is important,” said Hava Leipzig Holzhauer, an attorney and mother of four. “Super Sunday is a great opportunity for children as well as adults to learn the responsibilities and experience the joys of giving.”
“My family and I have always been part of the Jewish community, and my three children started coming to Super Sunday when we moved here almost 20 years ago,” said Debra Halperin.
“I’ve learned that even in these most difficult of times, our community goes above and beyond in their generosity, reaching deeper into their hearts for those who are hurting,” said Debra Halperin. “As more and more in our extended Jewish family need help, we all want to continue to be there for them – all of us and our own friends and families can make this happen on Super Sunday.” Super Sunday 2010 is generously sponsored by Whitsyms Nursing Registry. Supporters are welcome to sponsor telephones in memory of Gloria Baker, to whom this Super Sunday is dedicated: one phone for $100 or 12 for $1,000.
