The Anonymous Gift
Ellen R. Sarnoff, incoming Federation chair was at the podium. With her trademark verve, Ellen spoke of winning back donors, her open door policy and how Federation was like a big family— and, as family, she expected everyone to tell her about suggestions or complaints.
Anita couldn't help but notice how many of her dear friends were present, including the Stillmans, Gloria Lester, Roxanne Lipton and many others. Her only disappointment was that Dotti Seaman (for whom the Women's Department is named) was unable to make it. Yes, she thought, Federation is like family. And then Ellen began speaking about anonymous donors who wished to gift a certain someone with a Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) pin. The murmuring quieted. It meant that $100,000 was donated anonymously to the Federation. Leona leaned in towards Anita, "Do you know who it is?" As a key Federation professional who nurtured one of the country's strongest women's departments, Anita would surely know who the recipient is and who the donors are…. wouldn't she? "Not the faintest idea," said Anita who was equally intrigued. They looked up at Ellen, who continued.
Anita looked up, stunned. Applause filled the room. Guests stood up cheering. Ellen gestured towards the front of the room. "Look who else is here," she said. Anita's daughter Eve, son-in-law Yoav and her grandson Matthew appeared, having come from Washington D.C. as a surprise for the event. Although the anonymous donors did not wish to be quoted directly, Marla Weiss Egers, executive vice president of financial resource development, commented on their behalf.
A week later Anita recounted the surprise. "It was one of the most touching moments of my life," she says fidgeting with the pin that is now attached to a gold chain around her neck. "I don't know how I made it to the podium and I barely recall what I said, but my heart was thumping." Anita pauses to reflect. "What strikes me most is that this gift was given purely from the heart-- no one wished to take credit. It was totally void of ego. And now my grandson will learn what being a LOJE means. He'll understand how I am helping Jewish people in need forever." There's more to this powerful Profile of Giving! Click here to read the deeply moving full story.
